About the Beading Directory

I have set up this beading directory to help and protect members of the beading community. It should help designers, shops etc to market their businesses.

I also want it to help ordinary beaders find the things they are looking for. The categories should be self explanatory. So, you can use the search bar if you are looking for something specific. Or, choose a category to browse if you just need information or inspiration.

The one category that may puzzle some of you is the ‘sites to avoid’ section. In recent months, the beading community has been prey to some scam websites. Designers also find themselves prey to intellectual property theft, on occasion. Now, getting these sites removed from the internet is difficult. So, the next best thing seemed to be to set up a ‘warning list’. If you are about to use a new website and you’re not sure about it, see if it appears in the ‘sites to avoid’ directory. If it’s not there, still proceed with caution! You can find out more about protecting yourself from online scams in this blog.

If you are a designer or shop owner, or if you run a bead group organise a show or competition (however small), please add it to the directory. Just click on the ‘add a listing’ button and follow the steps from there. Please also share this with anyone you know who should be included in the listings.

If you are using the listings, then I do encourage you to leave comments and reviews. This will help other users to find good resources and avoid the ‘less good’. You can also report any listings that are broken, inaccurate or just shouldn’t be there. I will investigate and take appropriate action.

The information on here was correct at time of publication, but of course, bead shops can close, move or change. They may not remember to update their listing here. So, if you are planning to take a special trip to visit a bead store, show, or designer, please follow the website, or contact the listing to check they haven’t moved!

How to add a listing

Anyone can add a listing to the beading directory. But you will need to be logged in as a user in order to do so. You will be prompted to do this. So, if this is your first time adding a listing, then please ‘register’ to set up a new user account. This will involve creating a user name and giving your email address. Then, you will receive your login details via email.

Once you have those, return to this website and you can go ahead and log in and create your listing.

Step 1

Before you create a new listing, please check that you don’t already have a listing in place. In some categories, I have added free listings for the businesses that I know and recommend. So, if you see your listing is already there, you will need to ‘claim’ it. Just click on the ‘claim this listing’ link and follow the instructions.

Step 2

If you can’t see your listing in place, then you should click on ‘Create a Listing’. If you’re not already logged in, you will be prompted to log in (see the first paragraph).

Then, you’ll get to the screen with the form to complete.

Step 3

Choose the appropriate category for your listing. Here’s a quick run-down of the categories:

  • Beading groups – this is for online groups (eg on Facebook), ‘real life’ groups that host regular meetings or get-togethers, however informal, and also for bead retreats (eg an annual, or monthly, etc, gathering that runs official courses, or just brings beaders together to work on their own projects)
  • Bead shops – any shop or person, however large or small, that sells beads and beading materials. This is for bricks and mortar and online shops. So, if you sell beads, list yourself here!
  • Beading Designers – this is for anyone who has a website, Etsy store, FB store, etc which sells beading patterns or kits that they have designed.
  • Beading patterns – this is where you can list individual patterns and tutorials that you have for sale, or for free
  • Beading kits – this is the place to list individual beading kits that you sell
  • Beading competitions – if you run a competition that takes place on a regular basis (eg monthly, annually), or if you run regular competitions throughout the year, every year, then please add the details here
  • Beading magazines – if you publish a beading magazine please list the details here
  • Bead shows – if you run regular bead shows, please list them here. You can add listings for one-off events, but they will be removed after the event has taken place. So, it is best if you are able to link to a page where you update your regular show details so beaders can always find the next available show
  • Websites to avoid – this is the place to list any scam website that you find. The purpose of this section is to protect the beading community

Additional information about choosing categories

If your ‘beading business’ does multiple things (eg sells beads – bead shop – and you create patterns – beading designer), then you should list yourself under both categories. You will need to create a separate listing for each category. You can create as many listings as you wish.

The categories: ‘beading patterns’ and ‘beading kits’ are for adding details of a single pattern or kit. Listings in these categories should link to the specific page on your own website where you sell that product. So, for example, you might choose to list your main website address as a listing in the ‘beading designers’ category. Then, use the ‘beading kits’ and ‘beading patterns’ to create individual listings for some of your individual products. Again, you can add as many of these as you wish, or maybe just list your top sellers.

For competitions, please just create a listing if you run a regular competition, ie something that recurs every year, or every month. The listing structure isn’t set up to deal with one-off competitions that have a deadline which will expire. So, for example, the Bead Dreams contest is an annual event. The listing for that links to the main website where people can find out about the contest. So, it will be relevant at any time. Even if this year’s contest is closed to entries, people will still be able to see how to enter next year.

Step 4

Next, decide on the type of listing you want. All of them include full basic written information for free. If you want to include images or get your listing featured so that it appears at the top of the directory and search pages, you can choose one of the paid options.

Step 5

You can then complete the rest of the form. Fields that are compulsory will have an asterisk beside them. Fields for website addresses and email addresses will check that you have typed in the correct format. Eg, a website address should start with http:// or https://

If there are any errors on the form, they will be highlighted for you to correct before you submit!

Please use the ‘description’ box wisely. The information you enter here will be used in searches and will allow customers to judge whether they want to proceed to your website or not. So, make sure you are helpful and clear about what your business offers. You can find an article about writing good business descriptions at this link. (It will open in a new window).

If you leave any fields empty, that’s fine – they won’t show up on the listing. So, if you’re not sure what to put in a box, or it’s just asking for information that doesn’t apply to you, leave it blank. (Eg, the box for ‘address’ would not be applicable to a bead store that is online only…unless you want beaders turning up on your front door step!!)

The email address will not be shown on the listing. But it is used to confirm when your listing is published, or if any edits are made to the listing. So, please include it if you can.

If you want a few ideas, check out other listings in your category to see how people have presented their information.

Step 6

When you have completed the form, just click on ‘submit’. You will get a little message on the screen to confirm that your information was submitted. But I check every entry before publishing it.

So, you won’t see your entry in the listing until I have checked and verified it.

Typically this will take place within a few hours. But it can take up to 48 hours if I have a lot of entries to process. So, please be patient!

You will receive an email to confirm that the listing has been published.

Step 7

Please make sure you check you are happy with your listing. If you need to make changes, you can view the listing and you will see the option to ‘edit’ (you may need to be logged in before this option appears). So, just click on that and make any necessary changes.

Please keep your listing up to date. This will help your business as well as people using the directory.

Finally, please share links to the directory. The more people who use it, the more potential customers you have looking for you!

How to ensure your entry is seen

It’s all very well adding an entry to the beading directory. But as the number of entries increases, how do you make sure your entry is still seen.

Option 1

Write a good description that includes lots of keywords. This should ensure your entry appears in customer searches.
